Rodbuilding Philosophy -
We have a simple goal at Winston: perfection. Everyone who works here takes an extraordinary amount of pride in the rods they make. Pride in the performance and design of the rods, pride in the aesthetics of the rods, pride in the very heritage of the company itself.
Winston owners are no different. They care deeply about fly fishing and truly appreciate quality. Our rods are made not just to meet the expectations of these anglers, but to surpass them. Winstons cast beautifully, fish wonderfully and the craftsmanship and attention to detail are unmatched.
A Winston is not just a fly rod. It is a commitment to doing something the right way. Without compromise.
SOME OF THE MOST INNOVATIVE FLY RODS in recent years can be attributed to Winston. Our LT 5-piece trout rods, for example, revolutionized multiple ferrule designs. The Joan Wulff Favorite was created specifically to meet the needs of women anglers. Our BL5 and XTR rods proved the viability of advanced boron/graphite composites. Introduced in 2004, the Boron IIx series represents a huge
advancement in fast action rods.
Overall, we believe the true measure of a rod is not the ultimate distance it can cast, but how well it performs at the range of distances it was intended to cast. And most importantly, how well it "fishes." Every rod we make reflects this belief. Take our medium action WT rods. These aren't designed to throw 100 feet of line, but to make delicate presentations at 15 to 60 feet, where the vast majority of trout fishing occurs. On the other hand, our very fast action XTR saltwater rods are designed expressly for longer distances, or when you need the stiffness and power to handle sinking lines and high winds.
WE HAVE BEEN MAKING WINSTON PREMIUM RODS FOR 75 YEARS. They are not mass produced. Our Winston premium fly rods are hand-crafted by 40 some people whose lives revolve around creating fly rods that are the epitome of quality and performance. Hold one, and you will notice the flawless finish and details like engraved nickel silver reel seats and hand-inscribed serial numbers. Cast one, and you will experience uncommon smoothness, accuracy and power.
Yes, there maybe easier ways of making our fly rods, but that is not the Winston way. We have no interest in building anything but the best.
SELECTING A WINSTON:
WHAT KIND OF CASTER ARE YOU?
Beginner and intermediate anglers can cast longer distances using a fast-action rod. More accompished
anglers can cast just as far with medium-action rods, which also have the ability to make delicate and effective presentations at shorter distances.
DO YOU WADE OR FISH FROM A BOAT?
In terms of freshwater fishing, a fast-action rod is preferable if you're fishing from a drift boat. Quick and
accurate casts, and lots of them, define this kind of fishing.
WHAT TYPE OF FLIES DO YOU USE MOST?
Medium and slower action rods will present dry flies lightly on the water. Faster action rods will cast larger
flies and weighted patterns more easily.
WHERE DO YOU FISH?
A shorter length rod is better for small, brushy streams and overhanding trees. Medium length rods are more versatile, and preferred for larger water. Our longer length rods are specialized, with applications for float tubing, steelheading or casting for stripers from rocky shorelines where you need a high backseat.
IS IT WINDY WHERE YOU FISH?
High line speeds are needed to cast into the wind. These are most easily achieved with fast-action rods. However, very good casters can generate high line speeds with a medium-action rod.
HOW MANY RODS DO YOU NEED?
Most saltwater anglers own a variety of rods to handle a variety of lines and fish: an 8-wt for bonefish, 9 and 10-wts for stripers, a 12-wt for tarpon. If you can only purchase one, base your decision on the fish you most often pursue. The same logic holds true for freshwater. A 3 or 4-wt., a 5-wt or 6-wt will be sufficient to cover almost every trout fishing situation. If you can only have just one, choose a rod which will be most versatile for the type of fishing you do.
Again, these are very general thoughts. Your local Winston dealer is ready to answer all of your questions and help you select the proper rod.
What is Winston Action?
Every Winston has the unique and distinctive "feel" that comes from a rod that is lightweight, balanced and smooth. Over the years, this has come to be known as the "Winston Action." The "Winston Action" is something that distinguishes our fly rods from all others, and words really can't describe it. Casting or fishing one is the best way to understand.
